Why do I need to see my dentist for regular check-up and cleans? I clean my teeth at home
Are you sick of receiving reminders about being overdue to visit the dentist? Well, these reminders are actually for your own benefit to be on top of your oral health!
The recall period for most people with good oral hygiene is six months but this period may differ between people depending on their risk of dental decay as advised by their dentist. Even with excellent oral hygiene at home that is brushing twice and flossing daily, we all still need to visit the dentist! Having frequent check-ups will allow your dentist to pick up any cavities or “holes” early, to reduce the risk of complications that may require more extensive and expensive dental treatment.
Further, a professional clean at the dentist is different from cleaning at home because we remove calculus. Despite excellent oral hygiene, deposits form overtime on our teeth that becomes mineralised and hard from our saliva. This cannot be removed with a toothbrush at home. The consequence of leaving calculus for too long may contribute to the development of periodontal (gum) disease.
