Toothache

Toothache
Toothache is your mouth's way of telling you that something needs attention. The pain may come from decay, a crack, an inflamed or infected nerve, gum problems, a damaged restoration, pressure from a wisdom tooth or another cause. The right treatment starts with finding out why it hurts.
We ask when the pain started, what triggers it and how long it lasts. We then examine the tooth and surrounding tissues. Dental X-rays or other tests may be needed to identify the source, particularly when the problem is not visible on the surface.
Emergency care is tailored to the diagnosis. Depending on the problem, treatment might involve a filling, management of an infection, root canal treatment, extraction, adjustment of a restoration or another approach. Sometimes the first visit focuses on stabilising the problem before definitive treatment.
Severe or rapidly increasing facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, significant trauma or serious systemic symptoms require urgent assessment. If breathing or swallowing is affected, seek emergency medical care.
Pain can sometimes fluctuate even when the underlying problem remains. An assessment is the safest way to understand the cause.
No. Extraction is only one possible treatment. Whether a tooth can be restored depends on the diagnosis and its condition.
