Fillings

Fillings
A filling repairs a tooth that has been affected by decay, wear, a small fracture or the loss of an existing restoration. The aim is to remove damaged or compromised material where necessary and rebuild the tooth so it can function comfortably again.
You may need a filling if decay has created a cavity, an older filling has failed, or part of a tooth has chipped or worn away. Some problems cause sensitivity or discomfort, while others are found during a routine examination or on an X-ray.
Composite resin is commonly used because it bonds to the tooth and can be selected to blend with the surrounding enamel. The most appropriate material and restoration depend on the size and location of the damage, your bite and how much healthy tooth structure remains.
Where required, the tooth is numbed for comfort. The affected area is prepared and cleaned before the restorative material is placed, shaped and hardened. We then check the bite and make final adjustments. Larger or heavily weakened teeth may need a different type of restoration, such as an onlay or crown.
No. Early decay can develop without pain, which is one reason regular examinations can be useful.
Longevity varies with the size and location of the restoration, bite forces, oral hygiene, diet and habits such as grinding. We monitor restorations during routine visits.
