Children’s Dentistry
Your child’s dental visit is a chance to understand how their teeth are developing and ask about anything that concerns you. Whether you are planning a first check-up or have noticed a change, you are welcome to speak with us at Hillier Road Dental & Implant Centre in Morphett Vale.
Baby teeth help children eat and speak, and hold space for adult teeth. Looking after them matters even though they will eventually fall out. Regular visits also give your child opportunities to become familiar with dental care.
A check-up can help identify decay, assess the gums and review how teeth are coming through. Advice and treatment depend on your child’s age, oral health and individual needs.
Plan the first dental visit when your child’s first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. If that time has passed, you can still make a start now. For pain, swelling or a dental injury, contact a dentist promptly rather than waiting for a routine check-up.
A children’s dental appointment generally begins with a conversation about their health, dental history and your questions. Mention medicines, allergies, previous difficult visits or sensory needs when booking so you can discuss what may help.
The dentist examines your child’s mouth and explains any findings. X-rays may be recommended when they are needed to assess something that cannot be seen during the examination. Depending on the findings, options may include monitoring, cleaning, preventive care or treatment for an affected tooth.
Before agreeing to treatment, ask what it involves, why it is recommended, what alternatives are available and what it will cost. Some children may need care from a specialist children’s dentist.
Small, consistent habits help. Assist your child with brushing twice a day and ask your dentist about the right toothpaste and amount for their age. Offer water regularly and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. You can also ask about cleaning between teeth as they begin to touch.
Let us know when you book, including anything that has helped or been difficult before. Use simple, neutral language about the visit and give your child room to ask questions. Discuss any support they may need with the team.
The dentist can recommend a review interval based on your child’s oral health and risk of decay. Contact the practice sooner if something changes or you have a concern.
No. Sealants may be considered for teeth with grooves that are difficult to clean. The dentist assesses the tooth and your child’s risk of decay before recommending them.
Eligible children may receive help with the cost of selected basic dental services through CDBS. Ask about eligibility, the available balance and any costs before treatment. Our CDBS page explains the scheme in more detail.
